JIHLAVA – from the Medieval times dubbed ‘the Silver Town’, Jihlava has been an important social and commercial hub of the Moravian region since its founding in the 1st half of the 13th century. Even nowadays remains of the original defense walls can be seen in town. An extensive network of underground cellars and passages, some of which date as far back as the 13th century, is one of the major points of interest. There are two UNESCO listed historical monuments in the Jihlava region:
> The Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora – a unique testament to the mastery and genius of builder G. B. Santini, who chose the symbolic five-tipped star design forhis work.
> Třebíč – the Romanesque-Gothic St. Procopius’ Basilica and the Jewish Quarter, with the largest Jewish cemetery in the Czech Republic, were added to the prestigious list in July 2003.
